Music for every child, every day. TED Prize Winning program, El Sistema USA at my kid’s school. What The Bleep…
Through the beauty of Facebook, I liked, shared, bookmarked & followed the El Sistema program, when it won a TED Prize for its mission to provide music for every child, every day through public school orchestras, in the barrios of Venezuela. Of course, I fell in love with the mission, how it brought music to the children, how it brought families together, how its implementation was instrumental (pun intended) in bringing down the horrific crime rate in the youth. However, I daydreamed that someone would start up a similar mission here in the US & then last year, somehow through the chatter that I receive, I heard that El Sistema was coming to the USA & setting up camp at the New England Conservatory, BOSTON. What the bleep… No Way…
When most of my friend’s with children decided to leave for the ‘burbs, I refused to believe that there was not a great public elementary school in the city of Boston, the town that is the centre of some of the best academic institutions. I came across a few, but the Conservatory Lab Charter School, struck a chord with me. Most people assume that my husband & I are musically inclined, not so much, I have one playlist in my iTunes library and that’s not changed since I’ve had the account. I am a Serial Product Upgrader, be it, consumer goods or services, thus Creativity. Check. My husband, electronic engineer, thus logistical and techy stuff. Check. For us, it was the school’s ability to constantly inspire something that neither of could provide on a consistent basis, this being an interest in music.
My head spun with thoughts of how could get CLCS & El Sistema to connect, but I’m just an entrepreneur mother, who’s super busy and doesn’t have enough time to tidy her office. Fortunately for me, the school was on it & to my delight, we received an official letter informing us that CLCS + El SistemaUSA were not only partnering, but using our school as the lab for future programs and research. What the double bleep… Get out of here…
Last night the El Sistema teachers informed parents some of their plans for the program, much based on successful implementation in Venezuela, but they’re new and open to ideas. I grew excited when I heard that dance & performance for physical activity curricula was a given, however my mind started working at 100mph, linking links, seeing the obvious correlation of dance to yoga…
Then through the spinning in my head, like a the cliche, a light went on, when talking of dance & yoga, the parents were informed of the school being granted funds for some yoga instruction and of course who does the parent committee want involved… What the triple bleep…
Not sure if it’s the United Meditative Energies of the 21.5.800 Savasana+Writing Challenge, but I saw a link and I liked it… That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…
Here are some fabulous classical renditions of recent well-known pop songs compiled by the wonderful curators of all things cool, Flavorpill… My fave is the Gnarls Barkley cover, the kids love Telephone or anything with Lady Ga Ga…
