Fashion Boston nominates their 100 Best Dressed Bostonians. A surprised & chuffed Well-Heeled Guru was included…

August 11th started like any regular day, with the one exception, a text from Lisa Pierpoint, contributing editor, Fashion Boston and founder, Boldfacers, sending me a text to let me know that she had nominated me, moi, founder of Plank, mother, Well-Heeled Guru as one Fashion Boston’s 100 Best Dressed Bostonians. I recognise some of the names listed, such as Liana Peterson, New Brahmin, who shared with me the hot off the press news + kindly dropped off a copy at my door. I can not tell you how validating + ego stroking this mention was to me. From a young tender age of 11 or so, I drew my own shoes, in the hope that the high street stores would have something similar + I spent my summers running around the studios of the School of Fashion + Design, De Montfort University, so fashion, accessories + all that schtuff was already a lifestyle before most young adults are cogniscant that there is another way to dress or be.

I love how fashion pushes the edges of boundaries to make one rethink what is possible to wear and still look fabtastic. I really don’t even think that I am all that much in terms of pushing the envelope, believe me, my imagination can go much wilder and crazier, than what I end up wearing, sitting in front of my computer.  I’m no longer a young whipper snapper + still want to feel attractive and relevant, so I don’t follow fashion to the F-degree, however I like to find elements within a season’s trend that make a statement to carry me through, many seasons and years. I always put my trust in some of Boston’s most experienced sales staff to point out items that on the hanger, do not call to me, however when worn, totally transform a) from a piece of hanging cloth and b)my being + mind. I am often blown away by the power clothes have to uplift my confidence + spirit.

All this is great + wonderfully chuffsworthy, but nothing makes me warmer + fuzzier than hearing our child minder on her recent trip to North Carolina, in the hotter than hot, month of August, surprise her girlfriends by wearing a skirt with boots and throwing a colourful mix into her look.  So much so, that her friends commented that she’s looking fine but where did she get that look from. She relished feeling confident, different and proudly announced, her look was inspired by her boss… aka me, moi… Nothing beats being inspiring, except perhaps the acknowledgement from the inspiree. Seeds are sown so someone else can visualise how accessible + possible it is, to see oneself differently + be…

Not that I have a huge wardrobe of big designer names, however, I do have some choice pieces, plus a fair amount of fashion’s, mot du jour,  ‘Vintage’, which, is really just choice thrifting. I can’t pinpoint my own signature look, I know I don’t do pweeetty and I don’t do ho’…

Here’s some of my get ups that I wear for my glamorous life, of sitting in front of the computer, Plank trade events, shuttling the kids, going to the supermarket, off to yoga + sometimes out on the town, rarely caught in pixels, which Fashion Boston, refers to my  “mixing, matching and never missing”. When I look at these pix,  I guess Fashion Boston has it quite accurately down…

Who in your immediate circle has inspired your look, let them me know, but more importantly let them know…
