Alignment, Alignment, Alignment. What the Well-Heeled Guru wishes she knew then…

For those thinking about starting a yoga practice, I strongly recommend starting your investigation with solid foundational classes that focus on alignment, such as Anusara & Iyengar Yoga. Alignment is the grammar or structure for building the sentences and of course you can get by, with a modest understanding of the body and poses, but you always will be a little off, like a pretty fluent tourist.

Your ego, which you are supposed to leave at the door, but do not, (Guilty) can get you into injuries, (Guilty) if you try to do poses that you think you know how to do. Take it from me, who’s pretty well seasoned, a really good Anusara or Iyengar instructor will teach and reveal something new about the most basic of poses, every time, guaranteed. I probably would be a lot further along, too and be able to do some of those ego boosting poses by now, that I was in such a hurry to achieve. If you have to jump into Yoga at the deep end, at least consider adding some alignment focused yoga to your wellbeing practice…

Alignment is the foundation of any pose, whether in yoga or in life. Sometimes I wish I would take foundational classes in every area of life, the fact of the matter is I don’t, as long I am aware that there are improvements to be made and am open to learning, that will counter balance any impatient false starts…
